She can clamber back there with little difficulty.even through the middle. The reclining feature does make a significant difference. both for 2 adults and then 3 grandkids (12,9,6) with no complaints. At any rate, 7 works for usĪlthough not ideal, we have used the 3rd row seats several times. (although the center seat doen't look very accomodating on the 23 Ascent build page?). It's possible that if we had started with the 8 passenger we may have gone that way again. I like the pass through area and the captains seats are great for taking company along. We currently have a 7 passenger because it was the one and only to have last year when we bought it and ordered another like it this past August. We are long retired (2001/2007) There's just two of us, but we need the room for our yearly transplant to warmer weather. We don't fit the classic mold for having an Ascent. With our minivan we'd never be able to fit a 7th passenger. And when we need to we can put up the rest of the 3rd row and add a 7th passenger. This allows us to keep the 60% side of the 3rd row folded down, which gives us about 25% more cargo space vs our minivan (and actual space for our dogs even with our whole family in the vehicle). With the 8 passenger Ascent we fill the entire 1st and 2nd row, but only 1 seat in the 3rd row. This limits our cargo to the space behind the 3rd row, never more than that. With the 7 passenger minivan we are forced to fill all the 1st and 2nd row seats, and the 2 outer seats in the third row (child seats block the 3rd row center seat), meaning we have to keep the entire third row up 100% of the time. We are a family of 6 (2 adults, 2 kids in child seats, 2 kids in booster seats) + 2 dogs (60lb and 25lb) and the 8 passenger Ascent actually gives us more cargo space and an extra passenger seat for when we need it vs our 7 seater minivan. Specifically having a higher trim 8 passenger option that still has AWD. The available 8 passenger is one of the main reasons we chose the Ascent over other SUV's. We are trading a 7 seater minivan for an 8 passenger Subaru Ascent.
